The Importance of Keeping Your Computer Drivers Updated
Keeping your drivers up to date is one of the most vital parts of maintaining your computer. Fortunately, it is also very simple to do, and in many cases is completely automatic. Drivers are the software used by your computer to control your hardware, like an instruction manual for keeping all of the components of your PC communicating clearly and efficiently. This article covers some key points for driver maintenance.
Whenever you update your hardware, either by replacing a particular component, adding a new piece, or modify your configuration, you should update your drivers. You should also update drivers regularly, even if you have made no modifications to your system. Driver updates can change anything from power management, hardware efficiency, or component communication. As an example, drivers for peripheral device may enable a feature that was previously unavailable, or expand the existing functionality of a device, such as when drivers enable a mouse to have its buttons programmed for new purposes.
Failing to update your drivers could do several things. For some hardware, such as solid state hard drives, you may shorten their total lifespan by using obsolete drivers. For other devices, such as video cards, you may be unable to run certain software without up to date drivers. While this is especially true for video games, professional software such as Photoshop or other image manipulation programs may be unable to utilize hardware to its full capacity without the most recent set of drivers. If you work regularly with visual media, either static images or video, then new drivers will be an essential part of maintaining technological efficiency with your work.
Most devices on modern operating systems will notify you when a new set of drivers is available. When you initially install a set of drivers, a small monitoring tool may be installed on your system that will automatically check for periodic updates. Alternatively, some operating systems will automatically check for updates for you, as drivers are created specifically for an operating system. Hardware drivers for a PC running Windows do not update at the same time as drivers for a Mac, as they interact with the hardware in completely different ways, and may not require the updates made to the other system.
When installing new devices, always check the manufacturer’s website for the most recent drivers, as those that come with your hardware may be out of date. Check these websites periodically for updates to your hardware, as new drivers can enhance your existing hardware or protect you from newly discovered security threats. If you did not select your hardware yourself, your operating system should have tools that show you each of your devices, which you can then type into your favorite search engine to discover new drivers and details for how to compare and install them.

Which came first, hardware or software? This is a rather difficult question, seeing as how hardware doesn’t do much of anything without having software installed on it, and software can’t do what it is programmed to do without the hardware to host it. So, what exactly is the difference between hardware and software, and why are their functions so different?
Hardware
Hardware is defined as a device with the task of storing and running installed software. The hardware is the physical piece of machinery, such as the hard-drive, mouse and keyboard, video and graphics cards. These devices serve as the host system for the software. Hardware is changed far less often than software.
