The Palm Centro smartphone is an example of a mobile device that changes the way people who use computers for work schedule their time. A smartphone introduced in 2008, the Centro will fit into the palm of your hand. It has a tiny keyboard with all characters, a touch screen for easy interaction with the computer, and a digital camera feature. Like the newer Palm Treo, the Centro is a mobile device that followed the footsteps of the Palm Pilots, or personal digital assistants (PDAs).

With a smartphone like the Palm phone or the alternative Apple iPhone, consumers can perform many automated tasks. Owning a smartphone enables the user to leave the home or business and achieve more while staying connected to the office. For example, a smartphone with a data plan provides wireless Internet service, email, advanced address book and calendar applications, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access-compatible applications (provided by companies like DataViz), and Google Maps. Some smartphones even offer cheap monthly subscriptions to mobile TV channels.

Why IT Professionals Should Watch Smartphone Trends

IT professionals are tasked with developing more applications for smartphones as worldwide consumption continues to grow in 2010 and beyond. When technology professionals design web-based and computer-based applications, they should consider compatibility with smartphones and other mobile devices. Many webmasters already create web content with mobile users in mind. For example, the Internet giant Yahoo! offers a Mobile Web for phones like the Blackberry and iPhone.

The Role of Social Media

The voracious appetite for social media has brought more people to frequent social interaction online through their smartphone. Users around the world utilize applications like texting, email, and Internet portals to post written content, share pictures, and perform other tasks. They use easy compatibility with social media properties like Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook. This integration between the Internet, social media, and smartphones means more users are online even when they are mobile.

The Smartphone Operating System

The market for smartphone operating systems will also change in 2010. The Google open source platform for smartphones, Android, was utilized in less than 2 percent of smartphones in 2009; in October, Gartner predicted “a seven-fold increase in global Android-based handsets by 2012″ (MaximumPC.com). The position of Android will present competition to the top-ranked operating system (OS) – Symbian OS. According to MaximumPC.com, in 2009, Symbian was used in almost half of all smartphones. Gartner predicts this figure will decrease to 39% of smartphones in 2010.

From every angle, smartphones are important for consumers and IT professionals. As the Internet world moves from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0, the integration of all types of media and access to the Internet from mobile devices will grow. Although smartphones are smaller and more environmentally-friendly because they require less energy and consume fewer raw materials, they are also used by consumers for shorter periods of time than computers. IT professionals will help drive the use of smartphones in the information economy.
