Cybersecurity Risk Assessment

Most businesses cannot answer one simple question with any confidence: if someone went looking at us right now, what would they find? Not in theory — in fact. Which accounts are exposed, which passwords have already turned up in a breach, which machines have missed a year of patches, and which of the protections you are paying for are actually switched on.

North Star offers a complimentary one-time cybersecurity risk assessment for businesses across the Denver metro area, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. You complete a short intake form, we run the assessment, and you receive a written report of what we found. There is no cost, no commitment, and no requirement to become a client.

What the Assessment Looks For

The assessment examines your environment the way an attacker would approach it — from the outside in, then from the inside out. It is a measurement exercise, not a sales presentation with a scan attached.

  • What is visible from the internet. The systems, services and remote-access points reachable from outside your network, and whether any of them should not be.
  • Credentials already exposed. Company email addresses and passwords that have surfaced in previous third-party breaches and are circulating where attackers shop for them.
  • Cloud and email configuration. Whether multi-factor authentication is genuinely enforced for everyone, whether former employees still have working accounts, whether mailboxes are forwarding somewhere they should not, and whether your domain is configured to stop others sending mail in your name.
  • Endpoint and patch posture. Which computers are missing updates, running unsupported software, or lacking the protection you believe is installed everywhere.
  • Backup and recovery reality. Whether what you are backing up would actually get your business running again, and how long that would take.

What You Receive

A written report in plain English, with findings ranked by severity rather than listed alphabetically. Every item says what was found, why it matters to a business like yours, and what fixing it involves — so you can tell the difference between something that needs attention this week and something that belongs in next year’s budget.

We will walk you through it on a call if that is useful. Plenty of people take the report, hand it to whoever currently looks after their technology, and get on with it. That is a perfectly good outcome.

Why There Is No Charge

A fair question, and it deserves a direct answer. We do this because it is the most honest way to start a conversation. Nearly every IT provider will tell you they are thorough; very few will measure your environment first and show you what they found before asking for anything.

Some businesses read the report, recognise the gaps, and ask us to close them. Others discover their existing arrangements are in better shape than they feared, and we hear from them a year later when something changes. Both are fine. What we are not doing is holding the findings back, using them as a pressure tactic, or putting you on a call list — the report is yours either way.

Who This Is For

It suits any business between roughly 5 and 300 computers, with or without internal IT staff. In practice, it tends to be prompted by one of a handful of moments:

  • A cyber insurance renewal whose questionnaire asks about controls nobody can confirm are in place.
  • A client, lender or contracting authority asking for evidence of your security posture before they sign.
  • New ownership or new leadership inheriting an environment nobody has documented.
  • A near miss — a fraudulent invoice, a compromised mailbox, a payment that almost went to the wrong account.
  • Doubt about the current provider, and no independent way to check whether the money is buying what it should.

If your industry carries specific obligations — healthcare, financial services, legal, or defense contracting — the assessment is a sensible first step before any formal compliance work, because it establishes where you actually stand.

How This Differs From a Full Network Health Assessment

This is the fast, low-friction version: you start it yourself, it focuses on security risk, and it is designed to give you a clear answer without a discovery meeting first.

Our network health and security assessment is the deeper engagement that precedes a managed services proposal. It inventories everything connected, covers operational and lifecycle issues alongside security, and produces a budgeted roadmap. Most clients who engage us for managed IT services or managed security services go through that one. Starting here first costs you nothing and loses you nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it genuinely free, or free until the report arrives?

Genuinely free. There is no invoice at any point in the process and no charge to receive the findings. If you decide you want work done afterward, that is quoted separately and you are free to have someone else do it.

Will this disrupt anything?

No. The assessment is read-only. Nothing is changed, removed or reconfigured, and your staff can keep working normally throughout. We are measuring, not intervening.

What happens to our information?

Findings are used to produce your report and to discuss it with you. They are not sold, shared or used for marketing to anyone else, and we will delete the data on request. If your organisation needs a confidentiality agreement in place first, tell us and we will sign one before anything begins.

We already have an IT provider. Can we still do this?

Yes, and a fair number of people do exactly that. An independent measurement is the only practical way to verify that what you are paying for is working. If the report comes back clean, your provider has earned their fee and you have proof. If it does not, you have a specific, evidenced list to take to them.

Do we have to become a client?

No. There is no obligation, no trial period and no contract attached to the assessment. You keep the report regardless of what you decide.

We are outside the Front Range. Does that matter?

Not for the assessment itself, which is conducted remotely. It matters for ongoing support, where our on-site coverage runs across the Denver metro area, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. Businesses with remote and hybrid teams are common among our clients regardless of where the staff sit.

Start the Assessment

The intake form takes a few minutes and asks for the basics about your organisation so we know what we are looking at. Everything after that is on us.
