We’re a little late this month with our list of holiday and observances for geeks and tech weenies, but that’s understandable, since we’ve spent so much time trying to get our Christmas shopping out of the way early this year. (Yeah, finishing our shopping any time before Christmas Eve is considered early around here.) Plus, of course, we’re making plans for New Year’s Eve, which includes figuring out how to enjoy the celebration without having to leave our houses and put ourselves at risk among the slew of once-a-year drunk drivers out there. (New Year’s Eve, or “amateur night,” is the absolute last night on our list of safe times to drive in this country.)
Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th
If you happened to miss it, Saturday was Pearl Harbor Day, site aside to remember the thousands of men and women killed by the attack on our naval base in Hawaii which officially launched the USA into World War II. If you haven’t already, take a moment to remember the lost, and to hope that nothing like it ever happens again.
December Tech Holidays
For those of us in the tech field, holidays and observances are few and far between this month, but there is one we would like to share with you:
International Shareware Day, December 13th
Developed and named by super-geek Bob Wallace, the premise is simple, while the benefits are large. The idea is, “try it before you buy it,” and this is the day that many new programs and apps are made available to “share,” giving consumers and businesses a taste of the next hot idea to hit the market.
Other December Observances
Shouldn’t National Cookie Day take place on the 24th, instead of the 4th? After all, cookies are Santa’s favorite treat, aren’t they? On a more serious note, National Human Rights Day runs from the 10th to the 17th, along with Computer Science Education Week from the 8th to the 14th. (Oh, if only it worked better.) Another important day for us, because most of our days are taken up with solving problems, both real and non-existent, takes place very appropriately on the day after Christmas, the 26th: National Whiners’ Day.
Having missed Cyber Monday on the 1st and Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day on the 8th; National 12-Hour Fresh Breath Day on the 12th (Why only 12 hours, BTW?); National Chocolate Covered Anything Day on the 16th (NO, not your servers, please!); and National Thank-you Note Day on the 26th (We’re waiting!).
Of course, we would be completely remiss if we didn’t also mention that December is also “Awareness Month of Awareness Months Month! HUH? That’s right, this is the month that we strive to become more aware of the awareness months that we try so hard to make you aware of here every month. (Oy Vey, that was hard to write!)
So, be aware, be joyous, and be good because, as the song says, “He knows when you‘ve been bad or good, so…”
All kidding aside, being tech-conscious is important every month and, if you’d like some help with that, we’re here for you. The network experts at North Star are here to help you with all of your Denver IT support needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your IT service request for help with your operating system, apps, servers, or any other issues you may have.
Sorry, but you need to be “aware” chocolate removal is extra!
